The Hardships of Interview Season

Martinez, Adrienne '08

I'm writing to share quite a unique tale of an interview I had a couple of weeks ago. It's an experience that I hope never happens to you - so already you know this story is going to be good!

Some of you have heard my travel woes…like the time it took me four flights between six different airports and a drive from Las Vegas to Phoenix at 1 o'clock in the morning to get to my admit weekend in Ithaca. Or a couple of weeks ago, when it took me ten hours to get from NYC to Scranton, PA, during the worst storm this winter so far. Instead of keeping you in suspense, I'm going to start with the end of the story and then share the details: on Friday morning, I interviewed with five investment professionals including two MDs and two VPs at one of the worlds greatest investment banks-Goldman, Sachs & Co.-in my jeans, a velvet wine-colored sport coat, and day old make-up…an ensemble I had been wearing since the previous day.

Now the details: After being invited to interview in the third round for a summer associate position in Private Wealth Management at Goldman, Sachs & Co. in Los Angeles, I booked my flight for a weekend stay.

Thursday, February 22nd
5:00pm - Upon arriving at Syracuse airport, I noticed a small delay in the departure of my first of a two-flight itinerary. I became concerned immediately, recognizing I already had a tight connection in Atlanta. As I suspected, the delay which lengthened from fifteen minutes to an hour forced me to miss my connection to LA from Atlanta (a 9:40pm flight). The unfortunate part of this is it was the last flight out to anywhere in California that night and the first flight out would not get me to LA until 11am the next day when my interviews were set to begin at 8am.

9:45 pm - After spending a half hour on the phone with an extremely helpful Delta representative, we decided my best option would be to reroute to Dallas on a 10:30 pm flight and then take the first LA flight out at 6 am. Unconcerned about what I would do during the new five-hour layover in Dallas, I raced for the gate to make the flight.
