Johnson Board Fellows

The Johnson School Board Fellowship Program was formed in 2009 using a model created by other top tier business school programs. The Johnson School Program shares the goal of improving our community and the education of tomorrow's business professionals through joint work on community non-profit boards. The Board Fellowship Program matches MBA candidates with nonprofit organizations in the Ithaca and Greater Tompkins County area. Fellows are selected based upon their demonstrated commitment to the program and a history of academic and professional excellence.
Since our April 7th pitch during MLO, many of you have inquired about The Johnson School Board Fellowship Program. Some expressed an interest in applying, while others wanted to learn more about the program. While the application deadline has passed, with many great people having applied for a Board Fellows position, the matching process with our partner organizations is just beginning.
Once selected, the second-year student is paired with a non-profit organization and serves on the board of directors from September through April. Although the fellows do not participate in voting matters, they gain a deep understanding of board governance and operations, as well as the complexities of nonprofit management. Fellows are expected to be active participants on their respective board by joining a board committee and fostering ties between The Johnson School and the Ithaca Community. Fellows commit approximately ten to twelve hours per month attending board and committee meetings.
In 2010, the program is partnering with the following local organizations: Family Reading Partnership, Finger Lakes Land Trust, Cancer Resource Center, Franziska Racker Center, Women's Opportunity Center, Science Center, Community Foundation, Kitchen Theatre, Hangar Theatre, and the United Way. Our communities are richer because of the contributions by these and many other non-profit organizations-contributions to the arts, education and literacy, health, and family and child development. However, these organizations are not without need. The education we receive at The Johnson School is one that can be applied both to Fortune 500 companies and to non-profit organizations that serve our community. The Johnson Board Fellowship is just one way that we are working to give back to a community that has given us so much. Look around you this summer, and find out how you can give back to the non-profits in your area!
