When twelve first year students were elected to join Katy Moyer and Patrick Collopy on the Student Council this November, there were two themes that consistently appeared on every platform: careers and connections. Your 2010 Student Council has aligned itself with these objectives and has begun the process of seeking ways to improve and become involved both areas.
At Dean Thomas' Half-Time Report, you heard us speak about the school's commitment to securing jobs for students. The Student Council will play an active role in this process. Newton Kong, the Student Council's CMC representative, will guide a team comprised of leaders from professional clubs, along with Fred Staudmyer, that focuses on improving JGSM's presence in case competitions. The end result will yield increased exposure to both potential employers and prospective students.
Currently, the team is identifying case competitions by industry focus and is evaluating how to allocate time and resources to opportunities that will best enhance the JGSM brand. In addition, Bobby Hartshorn is benchmarking our current process against peer schools to determine the best course of action going forward. . Improving our ability to pass along "best practices" and implementation plans from winning teams, will enable JGSM to be successful in the long-run.
Stephanie Cheung and Shamis Abdi are aggressively working towards enhancing career-focused initiatives. Their aim is on improving the career preparation and exploration process that occurs before, and during orientation, as well as on prioritizing communication to and from Student Affairs and the CMC. This will ease the transition for new students to JGSM. Some areas of focus will include, but are not limited to, working in conjunction with the Office of Alumni Affairs to actively involve alumni and 2nd year students as conduits for career exploration, and creating expectations for professionalism, that can be self-governed by the incoming class.
